In 2006, in the Buzzi Unicem cement kiln in Robilante, the use of HQ-SRF enabled the company to reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by over 30,000 tonnes (a saving of 1.75 tonnes of CO2 is made for each tonne of HQ-SRF used in co-firing) making it possible to achieve the national objectives set under the Kyoto Protocol, and a reduction of over 20% of NOx.
Furthermore, its average biodegradable content of around 50% classifies HQ-SRF as a renewable energy source, and therefore able to enjoy the incentives envisaged for said sources (dir. 2001/77/CE, Dlgs.387/03). In the 54 municipalities, with 154 thousand inhabitants, served by the ACSR Consortium, the IDEA Granda plant recovers, in terms of energy, over 32% of municipal solid waste, surpassing the European average of 27%.
The Integrated Project, as a whole has been assessed by a Life Cycle Assessment study (L.C.A.- ISO 14040): the results show that it is 90 times more favourable, from an environmental perspective, than landfill disposal and 72 times more favourable than incinerator disposal. This study has been corroborated by the Bicocca University in Milan (D.I.S.A.T. Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Ambiente e del Territorio - Department of Environmental and Territorial Science).
