Pirelli Ambiente also operates in the field of renewable energy sources, in particular energy recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW) through the production of a high quality fuel, the SRF-P (Solid Recovered Fuel by Pirelli)developed and patented by the company with the support of the Pirelli Labs.

SRF-P is obtained by adding several components with high calorific values to the dry fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) and can be used to partially replace fossil fuels in existing, non-dedicated, plants such as cement kilns and thermoelectric power stations, with significant environmental advantages in terms of the energy recovery of waste and lower emissions, in particular of CO₂ and NO_x produced by fossil fuels, and economic (in terms of lower gate fees).

Since the end of 2002, this project has became an industrial reality thanks to the foundation of I.DE.A. Granda, a mixed public-private company, 49% of which is held by Pirelli Ambiente, and 51% by the municipal body ACSR - Azienda Cuneese Smaltimento Rifiuti. The fuel produced has been used successfully for over 4 years, in co-firing with the fossil fuel, in the neighbouring cement kiln in Robilante owned by Buzzi Unicem.
